Fort Lewis College athletes had a big weekend. The softball team swept its second-straight foe, two runners broke school records and the lacrosse team won its first game of the season in a dominant fashion. Teams from Durango, Bayfield and Ignacio also scored some important wins.
Fort Lewis College’s school records in the 3,000-meters got broken on Thursday at the UNM Spring Invite in Albuquerque.
Bean Minor set a new a school record in the 3,000 for the men, crossing second in the race in 8 minutes, 40.62 seconds. In addition to Minor’s success, the 3K team had its top-seven finishers run marks to rank in the top-10 in program history while each runner hit a personal best.
Brandy Ray also raced to a school record in the 3,000 for the FLC women, winning her race with a time of 10:44.56.
Pitcher Amiee Shanks was lights out in the circle on Friday for the Fort Lewis College softball team, guiding FLC to two more wins and a series sweep over the University of Colorado Colorado Springs. FLC won 6-0 and 6-4 on Friday, improving to 19-18 overall and 17-13 in the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference.
Guided by a career-high five goals from Caprietta Abbadessa and a dominant, eight-goal third quarter, the Fort Lewis College women’s lacrosse team scored a 17-9 win over CSU Pueblo in RMAC action on Friday.
Haley Dostie contributed four goals and a pair of assists, helping FLC pick up its first win of the year. FLC is now 1-7 overall and 1-4 RMAC.
The Durango High School girls soccer team stayed undefeated in league play with a pair of victories on the road. On Friday, DHS scored a 4-1 victory over Grand Junction Central. The Demons followed it up with a 2-1 win over Montrose on Saturday, to improve to 4-1 overall and 3-0 in the 4A/5A Southwestern League.
The Durango High School girls lacrosse team was also in Grand Junction over the weekend. On Friday, however, the Demons came up just short against Grand Junction, 10-8. DHS (2-4 overall) was also scheduled to play against Fruita Monument on Saturday.
The Bayfield High School baseball team shut out Centauri twice on Saturday in a doubleheader to begin its league season. The Wolverines only needed four innings to win Game 1, 15-0. The Wolverines then scored an 8-0 win Game 2 to improve to 9-3 overall and 2-0 in the 3A Intermountain League. Centauri slid to 6-3, 0-2.
Lots of other teams were also in action on Saturday as this paper was going to press.
