Three basketball players from La Plata County were recently honored with all-state nods for their performances on the court this winter.
Durango junior guard Mason Rowland, Ignacio senior Gabe Tucson and Bayfield senior forward Abby Tate all received recognition.
Rowland earned second-team all-state honors in Class 4A.
Tate received an all-state honorable mention in Class 3A.
Tucson scored an all-state honorable mention in 2A.
Rowland, who earned an honorable mention last year in basketball, upped her stats this year to lead DHS to the state tournament’s Sweet 16.
Rowland averaged 20.3 points per game and finished with 507 on the year. She also averaged 4.7 rebounds, 3.6 steals and 1.6 assists per game and shot 81% from the free-throw line and 41% from the field.
Durango finished 17-8 overall.
Tucson led the Bobcats in most stats this year, nearly averaging a double-double with 18.2 points and 9.8 rebounds per game. He also had 69 assists, 66 steals and 19 blocks for IHS.
Ignacio finished 16-7 overall, reaching the round of 32 in the playoffs.
Tate was Bayfield’s leading scorer this season, averaging 9.5 points per game while snagging 8.5 rebounds. She also blocked 2.4 shots per game.
Several other players from the Four Corners also were honored. Mancos’ senior center Connor Showalter landed on the 2A boys second team, and senior point guard Rhiley Montoya received an all-state honorable mention to represent Mancos’ girls team.
Three Dove Creek basketball players were honored. Junior Kade Hankins also earned second-team all-state honors in Class 1A while his teammate, senior Chorbin Cressler, received an all-state honorable mention.
Dove Creek junior power forward/center Lexi Gray received an honorable mention.
CHSAA also announced its all-state skiing, wrestling and swimming teams recently.
Durango skier Toby Scarpella, who won the state championship in giant slalom, was named all-state in both the giant slalom and slalom disciplines. Scarpella was the state runner-up in the slalom. Eight boys and girls were recognized in each of the four skiing disciplines, alpine and Nordic. There were no second-team or honorable mentions.
With only the top two placers in each weight class for wrestling and the top two finishers in each event for swimming recognized, no La Plata County athletes were honored.
