Safety tips for a windy, boozy and busy holiday weekend

The Durango Fire Protection District reminds residents and visitors to be cautious of bicyclists, high winds and large crowds this holiday weekend.

Memorial Day weekend will bring an influx of cars, bicyclists and pedestrians that will require everyone to be aware and courteous of each other to avoid potential injury, the fire department said in a prepared statement.

Weekend weather conditions are expected to include periods of high wind.

“Wind and fire can be a bad mix,” the fire department said. “Always attend your fire and have appropriate safety equipment available.”

Thousands of visitors are expected to arrive for the Iron Horse Bicycle Classic, Memorial Day events and the holiday weekend in general. Every restaurant and bar has an occupancy load for which the building was designed. Owners and managers are reminded not to exceed those loads. Patrons may need to be patient and wait to get into certain establishments.

Finally, the fire department reminds drivers that drinking and driving is illegal. People should take advantage of public transportation or designate a sober driver.
