San Juan Basin Public Health issues air quality advisory

An air-quality health advisory remains in place for areas around Durango and Silverton because of smoke from the 416 Fire.

Areas to the north and northeast of the fire will experience the worst conditions, according to San Juan Basin Public Health. Smoke could become heavier in Durango on Wednesday morning.

The health department advises people to stay inside and limit their exertion outside.

Poor air quality is specifically harmful to the very young, elderly and people with lung or heart conditions.

If smoky air comes inside homes, people should consider temporarily relocating.

Wearing an N95 or N100 mask can help filter particles but not gases. Paper dust masks, surgical masks and bandannas do not protect against smoke.
