San Juan County, N.M., property tax bills delayed

Due dates have also been changed
Many New Mexico residents will receive delayed property tax bills this year until their county voters have decided on a school mill levy ballot question.

AZTEC – Property tax bills for 2019 are delayed across San Juan County and other parts of New Mexico as a result of questions on the upcoming Nov. 5 ballot, the San Juan County Executive Office announced this week.

Last legislative session, House Bill 407 passed, resulting in 11 New Mexico counties delaying property tax collections until after the election. The bill lets school districts put a property tax question on the November’s ballot, known as a mill levy question. The counties with such questions on the ballot, including San Juan County, have delayed property tax bills from November to December.

The tax bills cannot be mailed to residents until the election results are in. But the date when bills are due has also been moved to accommodate the change, the county said.

Bills will be postmarked by Dec. 3 and payments, or at least first-half payments, will be extended until Jan. 10. Anything later will be considered late, the county said.
