San Juan Mountains Association to host Cross Canyon volunteer project

San Juan Mountains Association and Canyons of the Ancients National Monument will host a National Public Lands Day event at the trailhead to the Cross Canyon Wilderness Study Area from 7:30 a.m. to 3 p.m. Sept. 28 beginning at the Canyons of the Ancients Visitor Center, 27501 Highway 184.

Volunteers will install an interpretive sign, replace old and missing signage, complete gate and fence work and more. This is a moderate to difficult project. People 16 and older are invited to register.

Retired archaeologist Kristie Arrington will provide interpretation of cultural sites, and retired Bureau of Land Management Wilderness Specialist Chris Barnes will discuss the significance of the Wilderness Study Area protection.

Volunteers must register in advance. Space is limited to 20 participants. Volunteers will meet at the visitor center and carpool to the trailhead. High-clearance vehicles are recommended.

Participants should wear sturdy shoes, long pants, gloves and sunglasses, and they should bring a day pack with lunch, snacks and water.
