San Juan Regional Medical Center celebrates National Heart Month

February is National Heart Month, and San Juan Regional Medical Center is raise awareness about heart health in the community.

The New Mexico Department of Health says heart disease is the leading cause of death in the state. As an Accredited Chest Pain Center, the hospital is working to improve that statistic through community outreach, education and awareness.

Adopting heart-healthy habits and making lifestyle changes can decrease the risk of cardiovascular heart disease.

Four steps to prevent a heart attack include: exercising for 30 minutes five times a week, eating five fruits or vegetables a day, maintaining a healthy body weight and not using tobacco products.

Warning signs and symptoms of a heart attack include a feeling of fullness, pain that travels down one or both arms, jaw pain, excessive fatigue, anxiety, nausea, back pain, shortness of breath and chest pressure, squeezing or discomfort.
