San Juan Regional Medical Center wants to empower community members to help save a life if someone is experiencing sudden cardiac arrest.
In an effort to create heart health in the community, the medical center is asking all local Farmington businesses to share whether or not they have an on-site automatic external defibrillator (AED) by filling out an online form.
An AED is a sophisticated but easy-to-use medical device that can analyze a patient’s heart rhythm and, if necessary, administer an electrical shock (defibrillation) to re-establish a regular heart rhythm. According to the American Red Cross, for each minute that defibrillation is delayed, the odds of surviving a sudden cardiac arrest are reduced about 10%. Having access to an AED and knowing how to use one is critical and can be the difference between life and death.
Businesses may share the locations of AEDs by filling out an online form at https://bit.ly/2w1Z6wN or by emailing aed@sjrmc.net.
Responses will be used to create a map that will be shared with the community as a life-saving resource. The goal is to provide emergency services, first responders, community businesses and residents with up-to-date AED locations within Farmington city limits to reduce the time to defibrillation, if needed.
