San Juan title shot no layup for Ignacio

A San Juan Basin League championship eluded the Ignacio High School girls basketball team, but the Bobcats season isn’t over.

IHS (8-13) lost the SJBL District 3 tournament championship 50-33 to Ridgway on Saturday in Cortez.

“Our big glaring issue was we missed 16 layups,” IHS head coach Shane Seibel said. “When you miss 16 layups, it kind of gets you down a little bit.”

Ridgway (16-5) led 25-13 at halftime and stretched its advantage to 19 points at the end of the third quarter.

The Bobcats finished second in the district, which qualifies them for regionals.

“Hats off to Ridgway,” Seibel said. “They played real aggressive and were able to make their shots down low.”

IHS will travel to a host site for the regional tournament after not finishing first in its district.

The Colorado High School Activities Association will announce the regional assignments at 2 p.m. Sunday.

“We’re excited in all reality because we get an opportunity (to keep playing),” Seibel said. “Winning and getting into that championship game ensures us another week of practice and another game.”
