The hat-snatching, flag-fluttering breeze Wednesday in Durango was a sign of things to come. The National Weather Service in Grand Junction expects a strong northwesterly flow to generate breezy conditions – winds of 15 to 25 mph with gusts up to 40 mph – in Southwest Colorado below 9,000 feet this afternoon and evening, with the same menu on tap for Friday. Strong wind, along with low humidity and dry fuel are the critical conditions that exist in Southwest Colorado and are the basis for a fire weather watch issued by the weather service for today and Friday. Otherwise, temperatures are expected to reach the low to mid-70s through Saturday and then jump to the low 80s on Sunday, Monday and Tuesday.
