Thank you to the Herald for covering the proposed Durango Mall redevelopment, and to the Urban Renewal Authority board, city staff and engaged residents who are taking the time to study it carefully (Herald, Dec. 10).
The country is facing a severe national housing shortage, and Durango feels it acutely. The possibility of adding hundreds of new apartments in an already-developed corridor is an excellent idea. Thoughtful infill helps young families, teachers, nurses and service workers live closer to their workplaces, keeping our community vibrant and accessible.
I hope the concerns about Whole Foods don’t stop us from moving forward with the project. We can transform a struggling mall into a vibrant community hub that creates affordable homes, new jobs, healthy food options and increased long-term tax revenue.
Let’s meet this proposal with an open mind – and work together to welcome more of the people who make Durango so special.
