Scammers posing as LPEA workers

For the third time in 10 months, scammers are posing as representatives of La Plata Electric Association, threatening to cut off power because of a delinquent account.

LPEA customers are told that a serviceman is on the way to disconnect a customer’s power unless the bill is paid.

The amount is sometimes in the thousands of dollars, LPEA spokeswoman Indiana Reed said.

The demand is for a money order or an immediate bank transfer, Reed said.

Callers give their name and telephone number, which has been traced to India, Reed said. When called, the customer hears “La Plata Electric Billing and Collections.”

LPEA customers shouldn’t pay a cent or even pay attention to the demand, Reed said.

“We don’t operate this way,” Reed said. “We don’t call to threaten to cut off your power.”
