Scattered snow, rain expected Saturday for Durango

Weather system is expected to drop six to 10 inches in the San Juans
As clouds move into La Plata County on Saturday, they will bring snow to the high country and rain to lower elevations.

A winter weather advisory is in effect for the San Juan Mountains until 11 p.m. Saturday as a storm is expected to dump between six to 10 inches of snow in the high country, weather officials say.

The storm moving west to east across Colorado is expected to drop much more snow in the central and northern parts of the state. Durango should expect scattered snow and rain showers Saturday afternoon and evening, said Dan Cuevas, meteorological technician with the National Weather Service. No accumulation is expected in Durango, he said.

This storm is it for this week;the forecast is dry and cool until the end of the month. High temperatures for Sunday are forecast in the low 40s, with the region warming up to the mid- to high-40s by the middle of next week.

There’s a chance of snow Wednesday, Cuevas said, but the real storm is expected later. The latter, possibly major, storm could dump snow on the region by the end of the week, he said.

“Looks like it could be a messy weekend coming up,” Cuevas said.

All this snow is good for the region, which has been in a drought for the past year. A low snowpack this past winter led to one of the worst droughts in Southwest Colorado history.

“We’re looking for as much snow as we can get,” Cuevas said.
