I was surprised by the lack of public participation involved in the potential sale of the historic Durango School District 9-R Administration Building (originally the high school) and Big Picture High School (formerly the arts and science building) here in Durango. No public meeting? Not one?
When I receive my property tax assessment each year, I look to see where my money goes. The number one tax burden is 9-R. Closely behind are our fire district assessments.
How is it that one taxpayer-supported entity hands off an expensive property in need of extremely expensive renovation, including the demolition of the old arts and science building, to another taxpayer-supported entity, without any public participation?
9-R needs to reopen this conversation to include the public before the deal is closed.
