School threat may have originated in Europe

Columbine Christian School reopened Wednesday after Facebook scare
Columbine Christian School, which closed Tuesday after receiving a threat via Facebook, reopened Wednesday.

A Facebook threat made against Columbine Christian School in Durango appears to have originated from Europe, the La Plata County Sheriff’s Office said Wednesday.

The post, threatening to “shoot the place up,” appeared on the school’s Facebook page at 12:32 a.m. Tuesday. The private school at 1775 Florida Road canceled classes Tuesday as a precaution.

Classes resumed Wednesday with law enforcement on hand to greet students and parents, and answer any questions they had, sheriff’s spokesman Dan Bender said in a news release.

“Everyone appeared in good spirits, and business as usual,” he said.

The Sheriff’s Office is seeking a warrant to obtain information from internet service providers, he said.

The FBI has been investigating anonymous threats of violence made nationwide this week toward schools, hospitals, police stations, community centers and faith-based organizations. Some are voice messages and others are printed messages.

“The message to Columbine Christian School seems to fit a familiar pattern of voice and social media threats other institutions in the U.S. are experiencing,” Bender said.
