Schulz, Bayfield torch Telluride

Wolverines hold Miners to two field goals

A depleted Telluride High School girls basketball team was no match for the Bayfield Wolverines.

With only eight players on the roster Tuesday night and only seven Miners who played until the final minute of the game, Telluride couldn’t keep pace with Macee Schulz and the host Wolverines (5-9) inside the BHS gymnasium.

Schulz scored 14 of Bayfield’s 28 first-half points and finished with 16 in the Wolverines’ 39-6 win.

BHS led 7-2 after one quarter, as Schulz scored the team’s first six points, as she outclassed her opponents in the post.

Telluride (6-8) made only two shots from the field, both from Melena Krownapple, who made a basket in the first quarter and a 3-point shot in the third. Destiny Leyva went 1-of-2 at the foul line to give the Miners their only other point.

Bayfield received another eight points from Maddy Oltmanns. Cayanne Carlson, Aubree Farmer and Brooke Merchant each scored four.

After a 21-1 second quarter, Bayfield led 28-3 at halftime and could use the second half as if it were a practice ahead of this Friday’s rematch against Montezuma-Cortez. BHS fell by one point (44-43) at Cortez earlier this season. The Wolverines will host the Panthers at 5 p.m. Friday.
