The Fort Lewis College men’s basketball team jumped out to a 17-0 lead against Metropolitan State University of Denver on Friday and never looked back. The Skyhawks took a 45-24 lead into halftime and eventually prevailed 80-61 in the pivotal RMAC contest.

FLC can now win the regular-season league championship outright with a victory over the Colorado School of Mines at 7 p.m. Saturday in Whalen Gymnasium.

FLC women fall to Metro

The women’s game had a similar start to the men’s game, except it was the Roadrunners who made a big early push and took an 18-2 lead in the first quarter. The Skyhawks trailed 20-6 after one quarter, but played pretty even with Metro after that. Metro only won the second quarter by one point while FLC won the fourth frame by six. The Skyhawks, however, couldn’t dig out of the early hole and Metro eventually won 67-51.

Intermountain tournament heats up

The Ignacio girls basketball squared off with Crested Butte in the semifinals of the Intermountain League tournament on Friday and doubled up the Titans, 52-26, to advance to the league championship game on Saturday.

The Ignacio girls will take on the host and top-seeded Centauri in the final.

Centauri beat Montezuma Cortez in its semifinal, 69-18.

The Bayfield boys basketball team will also play for a league title. The Wolverines took on Montezuma Cortez in its semifinal contest and prevailed 63-61.

BHS will take on either Ignacio or Centauri, who were playing in the other semifinal at 9 p.m. Friday.

UPDATE: Centauri defeated the Ignacio boys 81-26 to advance to the championship against Bayfield. Ignacio will play Montezuma-Cortez for third.

Durango girls postponed

The Durango girls basketball team was also originally scheduled to play Pueblo West in the second round of the Class 5A state tournament on Friday. The game has been rescheduled for noon Saturday due to transportation issues.
