Scouts helped make cowboy parade a success

After being canceled in 2020, the 2021 Durango Cowboy Gathering Parade was a big success, thanks to so many people and animals, including the 33 terrific entries.

I would like to particularly thank Flint Gervais and Scout Troop 538 for helping on Saturday morning. As parade day drew nearer, I found myself short of help. We have always depended on the super FFA chapters of Ignacio, Bayfield and Durango as well as the Basin Rodeo Team to lend a hand – and a shovel! However, because of a variety of other activities taking place that weekend, I saw that I was not going to have as many students who normally assist me.

A friend suggested I get in touch with the Boy Scouts, and in no time at all, Flint Gervais, the senior patrol leader, emailed me that he and his troop would like to help. Come parade morning, seven Scouts and three parents showed up! I could not have been more grateful. The

Scout Law describes the principles that every scout should follow to become an upstanding member in their community. A few of these values are helpfulness, friendliness, cheerfulness and being courteous. Troop 538 displayed all of these traits and more.
