In answer to “What do you think of the art?” story in the Aug. 4 Herald: A very inappropriate choice!
I just returned from visiting Dillon, Montana, which has added five new, large bronze statues in Western themes: horses, cowboys, etc. These were a perfect choice for their Western town. Dillon is clearly in touch with its cultural history and got it right.
This strange collection of rocks named “The Arc of History” has little relevance to the history and heritage of Durango. Even worse, it distracts drivers from their primary duty of safely negotiating a confusing intersection with its battleship-sized concrete barriers as they attempt to ponder the meaning of the collection of rocks.
“The Arc of History” certainly does not reflect Durango’s Western heritage and is a very poor choice to greet our visitors to historic Durango. The Western statue in front of the Main Mall is appropriate, along with the horses in front of our train station.
Like a horse, we will have to put blinders on when going through this intersection!
