Search for Mancos town marshal open through Dec. 15

Spruell buys motorsports company
In this file photo from May 2016, Mayor Ellen “Queenie” Barz administers the oath of office to then-newly appointed Mancos Marshal Jason Spruell.

In the absence of former Mancos Marshal Jason Spruell, who

Alvarez told The Journal that the town began advertising for the marshal position on Oct. 25. Job applications for the position will be accepted through 5 p.m. Dec. 15.

Applicants can find the employment and application requirements on the town of Mancos’ webpage for job openings. Application materials can be sent to Alvarez’s email at halvarez@mancoscolorado.com, or by mail to Town Hall, PO Box 487, Mancos, CO 81328

Once Alvarez conducts background checks, verifies applicants’ previous work experiences and takes other steps to identify the most qualified people for the job, Mancos residents will have an opportunity to meet the final candidates during an informal forum.

Alvarez says the open forum will be an opportunity for Mancos residents to meet the town marshal candidates face-to-face and submit their top choice for consideration by Alvarez and others who will be handling the hiring process.

Once hired, the town marshal has jurisdiction of law enforcement efforts in the Mancos area and is responsible for managing the Marshal’s Office, with a role similar to that of chief of police.

Spruell was appointed town marshal in May 2016 after serving as the acting marshal for six months. He retired from the position in November after purchasing Mesa Verde Motorsports, a business that his grandparents started under the name Gene Patton Motor Co.

Spruell says he retired from law enforcement, concluding a 20-year career in the line of work, because he felt it was time to get the motorsports company “back into the family,” and he was looking for a “change of pace.”
