Search inconclusive for body reportedly seen floating down Animas River

Durango Police Department seeks information to help in recovery

The search for a body seen floating face down in the Animas River on Saturday was called off Sunday night until the Durango Police Department receives more information.

DPD and La Plata County Search and Rescue searched the river and its banks from Dallabetta Park near Home Depot to Tico Time Resort near the New Mexico state line on Sunday, according to a Facebook post from the police department. The identity of the person remains unknown, and DPD is asking river users to remain vigilant and report any sightings to 911.

Durango Police Chief Bob Brammer said the department has not received a missing-person report other than that of a 28-year-old man who is believed to be lost in the La Plata Mountains, miles west of Durango.

Officers responded to a report of a person floating face down in the Animas River on Saturday evening near the Humane Society. Officers from the Durango Police Department, La Plata County Sheriff’s Office and Durango Fire Protection District swiftwater rescue team responded.

An officer confirmed a person was in the water, but the officer could not reach the person on Saturday.

While it has been slated as a recovery effort, Brammer cautioned that no conclusive confirmation has been made that it was a deceased individual floating down the river, and officers only suspect it was a lifeless body being carried downstream.

“We can't ever be definitive until we actually know. And that's kind of where we're at right now,” he said.

He added that fast waters and vegetation in the river have added to the difficulty of the search.
