Ryder Searle gave victory a ride against Grand Junction, but the Durango Demons’ No. 1 singles player for the boys tennis team fell a tiebreaker short of that goal.
Turns out, he was the Demons’ best chance.
“We knew going into it,” Durango High School tennis coach Laura Ehlers said. “This was our first match with a full team, and we saw a lot of their boys at the Western Slope Open” last weekend in Grand Junction.
“We knew we were going to get good tennis,” Ehlers said.
The Tigers skunked the Demons 7-0 on Friday in Grand Junction.
Searle was the only Demons player to win a set, the opening set at 7-6, then lost 6-3 and the tiebreaker 10-5.
“That was really great tennis,” Ehlers said of Searle’s match.
The rest of the Demons:
Fred Edwards lost at No. 2 singles 6-4, 6-3.
Dylan Blair lost at No. 3 singles 6-2, 6-1.
Wesley Komick and Liam Millar lost at No. 1 doubles 6-0, 6-0.
Alec Ensign and Drew Downs lost at No. 2 doubles 6-0, 6-1.
Tim Martin and Blaise Page lost at No. 3 doubles 6-1, 6-0.
Elijah Konikowski and Jake Schanefarber lost at No. 4 doubles 6-1, 6-1.
DHS will play at Grand Junction Central at 10 a.m. today, “and hopefully we’ll get a few more wins under our belt,” Ehlers said.
