About 25 percent of residents who pay property taxes elect to pay them in two 50-percent lump sums. For those of you who do that, your second payment is due June 15. You will not receive another notice from the Treasurer’s Office about this.
This is done, or rather, not done, in order to save taxpayer dollars. However, if the Treasurer’s Office has not received your payment by a few days after June 15, you will get a “delinquency” notice in the form of a postcard, saying how much you owe plus current interest for being late with your payment.
The best way to avoid interest and ensure the Treasurer’s Office receives your payment is to pay by e-check. Go online to http://bit.ly/1U5yUGC to make your payment. All you need to type in is: http://laplatacounty.org, and then navigate to the treasurer’s page. E-check costs neither you, nor the county any fees. However, it does take about four days to process through the banking system.
You may also mail your payment to Denver, to the “lockbox” at the county’s bank. This is also a new process implemented this year, designed to save money. Using this lockbox reduces the cost of processing a tax bill from about $6 per check to about $1 per check.
Contact the Treasurer’s Office with any questions or concerns at 382-6352, or in person at 1060 Main Ave., Suite 103, between 8 a.m. and 4 p.m. Monday through Friday.
