In a big game in the conference standings for the Skyhawks, the Mavericks rumbled to a victory in the second half.
The Fort Lewis College women’s lacrosse team traveled to Grand Junction to face Colorado Mesa University on Wednesday. FLC trailed 7-6 at halftime, but the Mavericks (7-2, 3-1 Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference) outscored the Skyhawks 4-1 in the second half to secure an 11-7 victory.
FLC dropped to 2-5 overall and 2-2 in conference play to fall to sixth in the RMAC standings.
The Mavericks took an early 2-0 lead on unassisted goals by Jessica Cook. But the Skyhawks went on a 3-0 run to take the lead back behind unassisted goals from Delaney Benson, Taylor Cabrera and Kelli Warmouth.
But the Mavericks responded with three consecutive goals of their own, as Amanda Geary, Paige Elliot and Cook all found the net.
A Warmouth goal assisted by Cabrera got FLC back within a 5-4 deficit, but Mesa goals from Olivia Hayden and Amanda Barton gave the Mavericks a stout 7-4 lead.
The Skyhawks would answer back in the final 97 seconds of the first half, as Brook Galle scored twice to cut the FLC deficit to one at the break.
Ryann Pierce scored the Skyhawks’ only goal of the second half, as FLC was shut out for the final 19 minutes of play.
Cook finished with four goals for Mesa. Hayden added three.
FLC stayed close with Mesa in the team statistical categories. Alyssa Spencer made four saves for the Skyhawks and allowed 11 goals. Jillian Pfeifer made one save and allowed six goals for the Mavericks, while Kierstin Elder made five saves and allowed only one goal in 31 minutes of work.
FLC will look to end its losing streak at two games with a home game at 1 p.m. Sunday against Westminster.
