Second-half ‘spree’ springs FLC lacrosse in RMAC debut

Chalk up the first ever Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference women’s lacrosse game as a victory for Fort Lewis College.

The Skyhawks beat Adams State 19-9 on Saturday to win their second consecutive game to start the season.

This season is the first in which the RMAC is sponsoring women’s lacrosse. The Skyhawks previously played in the Western Intercollegiate Lacrosse Association.

FLC (2-0, 1-0 RMAC) led 9-5 at halftime but trailed 2-1 early in the game.

“It took us a while to get off of the bus and start playing our game,” FLC head coach Kelsey MacDonald said. “In the second half, we went on a scoring spree.”

The Skyhawks scored five unanswered goals after halftime to cement a victory.

Ellie Carpenter led FLC with four goals and two assists, while Brook Wineland scored a hat trick. Ally Kvidera, Kylie Smith and Carly Smoke scored two goals each.

Alyssa Spencer made four saves in goal for the win.

“The big thing was the ball movement,” MacDonald said. “The problem was before we were just watching one person drive, and that’s not how we play lacrosse.”

FLC will play Shorter University (Athens, Ga.) at 3 p.m. Wednesday in Alamosa.
