Why did Sen. Michael Bennet vote against lowering prescription drug prices for Americans by allowing importation of drugs from Canada?
Senate Amendment 178, sponsored by Amy Klobuchar, D-Minn., and Bernie Sanders, I-Vt., would have allowed Americans to legally obtain these cheaper drugs.
Some have argued that the amendment didn’t have consumer protections to ensure the drugs met American safety standards, but this is the same argument offered by the pharmaceutical industry. The safety excuse is imaginary, as most of the drugs that would be imported from Canada were originally manufactured in the United States.
They’re just cheaper in Canada because the government negotiates the prices to make them more affordable.
