Durango Public Library

Library Card Discount Program: To encourage community members to get a library card and shop locally, businesses participating in the program will offer discounts or incentives to people who show a valid library card from Durango Public Library through Sept. 30. Ongoing story times

Tuesdays, 2-2:30 p.m.: Baby story time, ages 0-2.

Thursdays, 10:30-11 a.m.: Toddler story time, ages 2-3.

Sept. 6, 4 p.m.: Tween Time, Minecraft: Activities and snacks offered in a space just for tweens and teens, ages 9 and up; Minecraft gaming will be featured.

Sept. 8, 3:30 p.m.: Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts and Mathematics Lab, Lego Club: Kids, ages 5 and up, engage in Lego activities.

Sept. 11, 10 a.m.: Health Insurance Assistance, Medicaid and Child Health Plan Plus: Experts from San Juan Basin Public Health help people understand and sign up for Medicaid and Child Health Plan Plus health insurance plans; held on the second floor in Study Room 5.

Sept. 12, 6 p.m.: Adult Board Game Night: Participants can find gaming people and discover new board games.

Sept. 13, 10:30 a.m.: Fired Up Stories: Firefighters and EMTs from Durango Fire and Rescue tell stories and give safety tips to preschool children and their families; story time lasts approximately 45 minutes.

Sept. 13, 4 p.m.: Tween Time, Food Lab: Activities and snacks offered in a space just for tweens and teens, ages 9 and up; learn cooking skills and experiment with food.

Sept. 15, 3:30 p.m.: Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts and Mathematics Lab, Catapults: Kids, ages 5 and up, build medieval machines and use them to throw projectiles.

Sept. 18, 7 p.m.: Books and Brews: Nontraditional book club will meet and discuss at Animas Brewing Co., 1560 East Second Ave.

Sept. 20, 10:30 a.m.: Fire Truck and Police Car Show-and-Tell: Event will occur in the parking lot across from the library, open to all ages.

Sept. 20, 4 p.m.: Tween Time, Tabletop Games: Activities and snacks offered in a space just for tweens and teens, ages 9 and up; tabletop gaming will be featured.

Sept. 21, 3:30 p.m.: Read to Rover: New and independent readers, ages 5 and up, can read to a trained therapy dog.

Sept. 22, 3:30 p.m.: Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts and Mathematics Lab, Painting with Forces: Kids, ages 5 and up, create art using physics.

Sept. 27, 3:30 p.m.: Library Community Champion Award Reception: The community will celebrate inaugural Library Community Champion Award recipients; light refreshments will be served.

Sept. 27, 4 p.m.: Tween Time, Crafternoon: Activities and snacks offered in a space just for tweens and teens, ages 9 and up; the library will provide supplies for craft activities.

Sept. 28, 6 p.m.: Michael Kodas Book Event: Best-selling author, award-winning photojournalist and firefighter Michael Kodas discusses the increase of “mega-fires.”

Sept. 29, 3:30 p.m.: Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts and Mathematics Lab, Fingers of the Hand: Kids, ages 5 and up, explore one of the most complex parts of the human body and build a working model.

Pine River Times LibraryOngoing youth programs

Mondays and Tuesdays, 3:30 p.m.: Gamer Club: Laptops, tablets, game systems, playing cards and board games available in the community room for all ages.

Tuesdays, 4 p.m.: Forest Lakes After School: Kate, the library children’s services manager, will lead stories, activities, crafts, snacks and science at the Forest Lakes Recreation Center.

Mondays and Wednesdays, 10 a.m.: Jammin’ Juniors: Susan Katzer of the Family Center will lead an infant and toddler lap-sit program, with singing, dancing, finger-plays, stories and fun, in the Imagination Room.

Tuesdays and Thursdays, 10 a.m.: Little Readers Story Time: Kate, the library children’s services manager, will lead stories, songs, activities and crafts for all ages.

Thursdays, 3:30 p.m.: After-School Program: Kate, the library children’s services manager, will lead stories, activities, crafts, snacks and science for all ages. Bus services are available for BES students.

Fridays, 1 p.m.: Home-School Lego Time: Home-schooled kids of all ages are offered an opportunity to create, meet new friends and have fun.

Wednesdays, Thursdays and Fridays, 3:30 p.m.: Teen Time: A space for teens will be available at the library.

Sept. 6, 6 p.m.: Getting Started with Sourdough Fermentation Series: Attendees will learn tips, tricks, recipes, taste samples and go home with a starter dish; cost is $5 and registration is required.

Sept. 10, noon: Third Annual Zucchini Extravaganza: A celebration of zucchini and squash for the community; open to all ages; includes potluck, contests, decorating and carving activities, live music, food and more.

Sept. 14, 6 p.m.: Cutthroat Journal Reading: Authors featured in “Cutthroat,” a Durango-based journal of the arts, will give readings to audience members.

Sept. 20, 6 p.m.: Pottery Class: Local potter Erin Weybright teaches participants how to make ceramic plates; cost is $10 and registration is required.

Sept. 22, 7 p.m.: Fresh from the Theaters: A screening of “Wonder Woman” (2017) with free popcorn.

Sept. 27, 6 p.m.: Detox 101: Nutritionist Fran Sutherlin leads a class about how whole-food nutrition can reduce inflammation that causes pain and discomfort.

Oct. 3, 6 p.m.: “The Modern Day Homesteader” with V, the Gypsy Cowbelle: A one-hour documentary will be screened at the library.

Ignacio Public LibraryOngoing programs

Tuesdays and Fridays, 10 a.m.: Open Studio Art Workshop: Time for artists to work on projects and socialize with like-minded people. Pat Knight will offer assistance.

Tuesdays, starting Sept. 12, 4 p.m.: Inklings: Snacks and a reading adventure will be offered to third- to fifth-graders.

Wednesdays, 10 a.m.: Alphabet Story Time: Stories, songs, puppets and more will be featured to encourage early-literacy development.

Wednesdays, 2 p.m.: Teen Cafe: A space for teens will be available at the library.

Monthly Schedule

Sept. 5, 1 p.m.: Basics of Computers: Learn computer basics and practice using a mouse; no computer experience is necessary.

Sept. 11, noon: Mystery Book Club: The library mystery book club will meet with Colorado author Margaret Mizushima to discuss the first book in her K-9 series; new members are welcome.

Sept. 11 and Sept. 25, 4 p.m.: Anime Club: The anime club will meet and share anime-specific content; the meeting is open to middle-school-age kids and up.

Sept. 28, 5:30 p.m.: Introduction to Coding: Attendees will explore fundamental concepts of coding languages. Students use Scratch, a visual coding environment, to declare variables, define loops and create conditionals, then translate the results to code in Python, a common coding language.
