Hopper’s Storytime: Thursdays 11-11:30 a.m. Read books, meet new friends and make a craft together.

Children

Kindergarten Readiness Workshop Series: Tuesdays, 11 a.m.- noon. The Early Childhood Council of La Plata County and Pine River Library present a six-part series of free workshops for parents/caregivers and their preschool-age children.

Join us weekly to explore new interests, delve into the wonders of learning science and create artistic masterpieces.

STEAM Power Hour (Grades 3-5): Mondays, 4-5 p.m.

Junior STEAM Power Hour (Grades K-2): Wednesdays, 4-5 p.m.

Teens

Teen Free Play: Tuesdays and Thursdays, 4-5 p.m. Tabletop games, PlayStation, Oculus, food and fun.

Teen Tabletop Club: Monthly on the First Saturday, 11 a.m.-1 p.m. A monthly tabletop gaming session. Magic, D&D, Cthulhu and more – you choose the adventure.

Weekly Programs

Full Body Fit Class: Monday-Thursday, 8:15-8:50 a.m. Work out using your own body weight or light hand weights to work all of the body parts. The free classes are always similar in style but always different moves. You’ll need a yoga mat and light hand weights. If you don’t have them, there are extras that can be used. All ages and fitness levels.

Friends of the Library Shed Book Sale: Tuesdays, 1-3 p.m.: Weekly pop-up book sale.

Open Art Studio: Thursdays, 10 a.m.-2 p.m.: All mediums. All ages. Work on projects in a group setting.

Community Knitting and Crochet Group: Sundays, 2-4 p.m.: All are welcome. Whether you have been knitting and/or crocheting for years or you would like to learn, we will do our best to help you get started.

Adult Programs

Sept. 4: Closed for Labor Day holiday.

Sept. 7, 4-6 p.m.: County Commissioner Office Hours: Matt Salka will hold in person office hours. Members of the public are invited to meet with Salka to discuss county issues of interest or concern. For more information, call 382-6219.

Sept. 8, 4-5:30 p.m.: Mahjong Meetup: Mahjong is a tile-based tabletop game developed in 19th century China. All are welcome, join us twice monthly to play.

Sept. 11, 6-8 p.m.: Typeset Writer’s Group: No rules, just writing. Each month a member of the group will bring an article for discussion. Participants also have the option to bring two pages of their own writing to read aloud, but it’s not required. If you’d like to read your own writing, bring it in manuscript format.

Sept. 12, 10-11 a.m.: Card Making at the Pine River Senior Center: Create two beautiful handmade cards.

Sept. 13, 6-7:30 p.m.: BookMarks Book Club: Open to all adults in the Pine River Valley. The library provides the books, the discussion leader and a place to meet each month. Stop by the front desk to check out a copy of this month’s title, “The Painted Drum,” by Louise Erdrich.

Sept. 16, 11 a.m.-2 p.m.: Zucchini Fest: Celebrate the humble squash. Contests include: biggest zuke, best dressed, ugliest and best carved. Bring a squash dish for the community potluck and participate in the Zucchini Olympics. Attendees will also be treated with music from Durango’s Six Dollar String Band.

Sept. 22, 11:30 a.m.-12:30 p.m.: Pine River Senior Center Outreach: Books and DVDs available for check out, delivered to the Senior Center with an extended loan period each month.

Sept. 22, 4-5:30 p.m.: Mahjong Meetup: Mahjong is a tile-based tabletop game developed in 19th century China. All are welcome, join us twice monthly to play.

Sept. 26, 1-2:30 p.m.: Death Café: A Death Cafe is a time and place where people come to share food, drink tea or coffee, and discuss death openly and honestly.

Sept. 26, 6-7:30 p.m.: How the West was Clothed: Bayfield weaver and spinner Sherry Hawkins will give a talk about the history of clothing in the American West. This program is part of History Live., a series of events celebrating the humanities in September in Southwest Colorado.

Sept. 28, 11:30 a.m.-12:30 p.m.: Conversation en español: Practice your Spanish in an informal setting. All ages and language levels welcome.

Repair Café: Thursday, Sept. 7 at 6 p.m.: A neighborhood initiative that promotes repair as an alternative to tossing things out. Bring broken items to fix them on the spot with the help of voluntary repairers.

Silly Science Saturday: Saturday, Sept. 9 at noon: Join us and our favorite Mad Scientist, Mrs. Libby, for a day of having fun with hands on learning and science experiments. Free program for elementary school children.

Dementia, Let’s Talk About It: Tuesday, Sept. 12 at 2 p.m.: We host Beverly Ellis, as we discuss improving brain health, caregivers, what the warning signs of dementia are and what resources are out there. Free class, no sign-up required.

Vitalant Blood Drive: Thursday, Sept. 14 at 1 p.m.: Sign up in advance at vitalant.org or call (887) 258-4825, walk-ups are welcome. Taking Whole Blood and Power Red Donations.

Upcycle T-shirts Craft Day: Friday, Sept. 15 at 2:30 p.m.: Bring your own shirt to this craft class where we'll help you to make it into new style for you to flaunt or to give as a gift. Free program, no sign-up required.

Teen Night: Monday, Sept. 18 at 6 p.m.: Middle school and high school kids are invited for pizza and mini golf in the library. This after-hours library program is a great way to make friends and connect with peers in the community. Staff members will be present, pick up kids promptly at 8 p.m. or earlier.

Regular Programs

Tuesdays at 10 a.m.: Storytime: On a new day. Stories, songs, crafts and more to encourage literacy in young ones.

Tuesdays at 10:30 a.m.: Open Art Studio: Work on art projects, receive help and advice, and enjoy good times with other local artists. Guests and new members welcome.

Wednesdays at noon: Electronics Hour: Tune up your skills or learn something new about electronic-based projects and more.

Thursdays at 1 p.m.: Knitters Group: Join our group of knitters for a beverage and chat in the Community Room.

Fridays at 9 a.m.: Go Donuts for Books: Join us for coffee and doughnuts. It’s a great time check out new books and a sneak peek of what is coming in. Also chat with library staff members and catch up on everything happening at the library.

Fridays at noon: Sewing Group: Whether you’re a beginner or an expert, you’re invited to join us every Friday for fun around sewing projects and crafts.

Saturdays at noon: Dungeons & Dragons Club: It’s an enjoyable, safe, friendly and memorable club for everyone.

Southwest La Plata Library District

Ongoing Events

Toddler Storytime at Sunnyside, Every Thursday at 2 p.m. Stories, movement, songs and fingerplays for toddlers ages 2 to 4 and their caregivers. For more information, contact patty@swlplibrarydistrict.org.

Knitting Meetup at Sunnyside, Fridays at 3 p.m. Bring knitting or other portable craft project.

Powerhouse Pass Program, Sunnyside Library and Fort Lewis Mesa Library have Powerhouse Passes available for check out at each library. The pass will allow you and your immediate family free entry to the Powerhouse Science Center. Passes can be checked out on an adult library card for one week.

Check Out State Parks Program, Fort Lewis and Sunnyside Libraries have “Check Out State Parks” backpacks available for check out. Each pack includes a pass for free entry to Colorado state parks, binoculars, wildlife viewing guides and park information. The pack can be checked out on an adult library card for one week.

Thursday, Sept. 7, 5:30 p.m., Books and Blankets: Sunnyside’s third-annual family event. Join us on the Sunnyside library lawn. Bring a blanket and your family and we’ll provide dinner. Each family will receive a copy of the book “Charlotte’s Web,” by E.B. White.

Monday, Sept. 18: Schools closed for teacher work day, libraries open to the public 10 a.m.-7 p.m.

Monday, Sept. 18, 4 p.m.: Southwest La Plata Library District board meeting, held in the Ecosphere Environmental Services conference room, 776 East Second Ave. Additional information can be found at either library location or swlplibrarydistrict.org.
