A northbound lane of traffic will be shut down next week along part of north Main Avenue while a sewer line is repaired for The Boys & Girls Club.
Archer Western Construction plans to repair a collapsed sewer line that runs underneath the road for the nonprofit, said Vaughn Morris, CEO of The Boys & Girls Club of La Plata County.
Archer Western and local businesses are donating equipment and materials to pay for the repair, which will cost nearly $100,000.
“It’s amazing how the community comes together and makes these things happen,” Morris said.
The clay sewer line collapsed about nine months ago, and The Boys & Girls Club had a short-term repair done. But the nonprofit was unsure how it was going to fix the larger problem with the building it leases from La Plata County, he said.
“It’s always a joint partnership as to how those things are going to get taken care of,” he said.
Chicago-based Archer Western is the contractor rebuilding the sewage-treatment plant in Santa Rita Park. The Boys & Girls Club approached the company about doing the repair after hearing it often does projects for communities that it works in.
Four Corners Materials, GJ Pipe, Alert Signs and Ferguson of Durango also donated to the project.
The Boys & Girls Club will remain open during the repairs. Children who attend the programs will use restroom facilities in the Durango Community Recreation Center, Morris said.
One northbound lane of traffic will be closed from the rec center at 2700 Main Ave. to just south of 29th Street around the clock Monday through Friday, Colorado Department of Transportation spokeswoman Lisa Schwantes said. Construction will take place from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m.
