Sheriff’s Office investigating stabbing at Durango homeless camp

31-year-old sent to Mercy Regional Medical Center
The La Plata County Sheriff’s Office is investigating a stabbing that occurred between 10 and 11 p.m. Saturday at the homeless camp near the Durango Tech Center. A 31-year-old man was taken to Mercy Regional Medical Center with injuries, and as of Sunday, he has not been discharged.

A stabbing that occurred at the homeless camp in Durango late Saturday night is being investigated by the La Plata County Sheriff’s Office, spokesman Dan Bender said on Sunday.

According to Bender, between 10 and 11 p.m., a 31-year-old man was taken to Mercy Regional Medical Center with injuries, and as of Sunday, he has not been discharged.

Though the incident is still under investigation, Bender said initial reports indicate the man confronted a group of three men in their mid-20s at the homeless camp, located near the Durango Tech Center.

Bender said the 31-year-old man pulled a knife, and when the group of three attempted to take the sharp object away from the man, he was stabbed.

“From the investigation so far, he appears to be the primary aggressor even though he’s the one who received the wounds,” Bender said.

Bender said the three men in their twenties were temporarily placed in custody, but later released based on the information gathered at the scene.

Bender said no charges have been filed against the person injured, but the case is still under investigation. He said the 31-year-old man appeared to be under the influence of alcohol or drugs.
