Shooter drill conducted at Ignacio High

About 100 officers from various law-enforcement agencies, including the Department of Homeland Security, conducted an “active-shooter drill” today at Ignacio High School.

The drill was planned several months ago, said Carl Bush, a supervising officer at Homeland Security, who answered the telephone at the Ignacio Police Department.

Students are not involved, Bush said.

Among agencies training are the Ignacio Police Department, the La Plata County Sheriff’s Office and the Bayfield Marshal’s Office, Bush said.

Bush said he couldn’t reveal which Homeland Security office he is from.

Ignacio School District 11-JT Superintendent Rocco Fuschetto said the high school was not locked down. It is locked as it routinely is, he said.

Graffiti found in a bathroom at Ignacio Middle School last week that threatened an act of violence lends immediacy to the drill at the high school.

A note sent to parents said the graffiti was “likely” done by students to disrupt the learning process.

The middle school would not close as a result of the threat, the note to parents said.
