No arrests have been made in death of 54-year-old man
The La Plata County Sheriff’s Office is investigating a shooting that occurred Monday southwest of Durango.

The La Plata County Sheriff’s Office on Tuesday identified the victim of a shooting that occurred Monday southwest of Durango.

Stephen Sanders, 54, was shot and killed shortly before 12:20 p.m. inside a home on County Road 133, according to the Sheriff’s Office.

Investigators reported Sanders was found deceased at the home when police arrived.

Law enforcement questioned witnesses who were in the residence at the time of the shooting, but no arrests had been made as of 2:30 p.m. Tuesday.

An autopsy of Sanders was performed Tuesday morning. Sheriff’s Office spokesman Chris Burke said the shooting appears to be intentional.

La Plata County Coroner Jann Smith said investigators were not prepared Tuesday afternoon to release the number of times Sanders was shot, or where on his body he was shot.

“We’re waiting to hear back from investigators to see if there will be charges or no charges,” Burke said.

An earlier version of this story incorrectly reported that La Plata County Sheriff’s Office spokesman Chris Burke said the shooting appeared to be accidental. He said it was not immediately known whether it was accidental, and later said the shooting appears to be intentional.
