A pair of Durango Demons’ football teams continued their undefeated run through the Youth American Football League.
The sixth-grade Durango Demons won 54-0 to improve to 5-0.
The second-grade Durango Demons won 33-0 to improve to 4-0.
The sixth-grade Demons rallied around a dominant defense and seven different touchdown scorers in their shutout Saturday at home against Bayfield.
Alex Pavon recovered a Bayfield fumble in the endzone for a 6-0 first-quarter lead.
Jordan Woolverton threw a 43-yard touchdown pass to Niko Mestas, a 55-yard touchdown pass to Solomon Gabel and a 14-yard touchdown pass to Cal Walsh, including Woolverton’s 14-yard touchdown scramble, to take a 34-0 halftime lead.
Woolverton, playing at fullback, took a handoff up the seam for 47 yards and a third-quarter touchdown.
Matthew Cuthbert followed with a 25-yard touchdown run and a 48-0 lead after three quarters.
Niko Martinez capped the Demons’ scoring with his first career touchdown – a 3-yard run – for the final margin of victory.
Derek Carman added an interception on defense, and Thomas Barnes and Pavon led the Demons in tackles.
The Demons will host Aztec at 1 p.m. Saturday at Miller Middle School.
The second-grade Demons were backed by a strong ground game – Malakai Baier (53 yards rushing, one touchdown), Wyatt Bartell (40 yards rushing, two touchdowns) and Cole Pontine (62 yards rushing, two touchdowns).
Linkin Griego added a pair of extra points – one passing to Bryson Quimby and one rushing.
Quimby led the defense with two fumble recoveries and three tackles.
The Demons will play Aztec at 3 p.m. Saturday in Aztec.
The fifth- and fourth-grade Demons also played shutouts.
The fifth-grade Demons beat Farmington 19-0 to improve to 3-2, while the fourth-grade Demons lost 20-0 to Aztec.
After a scoreless first quarter, the fifth-grade Demons reached the scoreboard first on Chase Robertson’s 25-yard touchdown run in the second quarter.
Jake Swift scored on a 3-yard run in the fourth quarter, and Emmett Thompson scored the game’s final touchdown on a 45-yard run. Douglas Malcom passed to William Knight for the extra point and the 19-0 victory.
Lincoln Clay had some big sacks, Robertson had an interception, and Jordan Stanley had a fumble recovery.
Durango will play Saturday at Aztec.
The fourth-grade Demons showed some offense in a back-and-forth game but were snuffed inside the 10-yard line a couple of times.
Durango will host Bayfield at 11 a.m. Saturday at Miller Middle School.
The third-grade Demons beat Shiprock 34-6 for their first win of the season.
Tyler Harms had 173 yards rushing and two touchdowns, and Brett Hamer added 105 yards rushing and two touchdowns.
Tanner Anderson had 44 yards rushing, one touchdown and three extra points.
Conner McCroskey led the Demons’ defense with four sacks and four tackles.
The Demons will host Aztec at 9 a.m. Saturday at Miller Middle School.
