Silverton will vote Tuesday on the future use of ATVs in town.

Silverton voters will decide in a special election Tuesday the future use of all-terrain vehicles within town limits.

In February, three petitions were circulated around town that sought to address ATV use in town.

Voters will decide between:

Opening the entire town to ATV use;Banning ATVs in town, andAllowing the town board to adjust current rules.Silverton voters in spring 2014 agreed to open some streets to ATV use in a 243-179 vote, about 58 percent to 42 percent.

But after three summer seasons, some residents say ATVs have overrun the town, caused damage to roads and affected overall quality of life.

Others point to the difficulty the San Juan County Sheriff’s Office has enforcing the rules.

Those in favor of ATVs in town claim there’s been an uptick in tourism, leading to increased revenues, since 2014.
