First United Methodist Church will be filled with music next weekend as the Durango Choral Society, along with the Durango Women’s Choir and Telluride’s Renaissance Singers, presents “Homeland.”
“This is a tradition. We’ve been doing this for a number of years, and it’s gotten more and more popular,”says Artistic Director Linda Mack Berven, who conducts the Women’s Choir. “Last year, we were sold out; it was amazing.”
The show, which will be performed on the evening of March 10 and the afternoon of March 11, is part of the society’s bigger season, which this year is titled “Pathways.”
“The whole idea behind the title is we’re always going somewhere, and you can’t go somewhere if you haven’t started on the journey,” Mack Berven says. “So this concert, called ‘Homeland,’ was designed to give people a sense of belonging, a sense of home. There are so many different kinds of music that can elicit those kinds of feelings.”
She says that as she was putting together the concert, she was trying to put together a journey. “If you look at the titles, you’ll see that we start right here at home and we make our way to heaven.”
The concert will close with a performance of the song “Calling My Children Home,” a song that will be performed with the singers surrounding the audience on all sides.
“The piece ... is one that probably won’t be familiar with the audience, but it’s going to affect them deeply – it’s extremely emotionally moving text, and the music is beautiful,” Mack Berven says.
