Single-payer system works for many in U.S.

Since there were not enough Senate votes to replace the Affordable Care Act, efforts have now focused on the abolishment of the A.C.A.

Along with others who benefit from a single-payer health care system, I remain somewhat protected from the current chaos. If you are over 65, a U.S. government employee or retiree thereof, a Native American or a veteran of foreign wars, you also benefit from the American single-payer health care system.

I have not done the research to determine what percentage of Americans fall into these four categories, but I would wager that many of us either belong to one of these four groups or are acquainted with citizens who do.

Iterations of universal health coverage are functioning in Britain, France, Canada, Germany and Japan (to name a few that embrace universal health coverage). It is well documented that providing universal access to health care is both less expensive and more effective.

And yet...what are we thinking?
