Six Fort Lewis men’s soccer players recognized by RMAC

Fort Lewis College’s Yannis Becker put on a display at Dirks Field in his final season playing for the Skyhawks. The German star was named an All-RMAC First Team player Tuesday by the conference’s 11 coaches.

Two Germans and a blossoming star from Colorado Springs were recognized as the best at their positions Tuesday.

Fort Lewis College’s Yannis Becker, Sean Cleary and Tamino Kroeger were named to the All-Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference First Team for their performance during the men’s soccer regular season.

Becker led the team with 19 points and put 31 of his 66 shots on goal. He scored four game-winning goals and displayed elite skill on both ends of the field. He finished with six goals and seven assists.

Kroeger, a junior, was limited by injuries throughout the regular season but scored seven goals and added one assist.

Cleary, a redshirt freshman, anchored a strong defensive back line for the Skyhawks (11-5-2, 6-3-1 RMAC). He twice was named the RMAC Defensive Player of the Week.

Senior Zac Lawrence was named to the second team. He stepped up big with five goals and six assists.

Younger players named to the honorable mention for Fort Lewis were Coleman Kane and Laurin Weiland.

Kane, a redshirt freshman, was a stout defender all season and scored one goal and one assists. Weiland, a true freshman, made his presence known with three goals and three assists.

Colorado Mines, ranked No. 8 in NCAA Division II, swept the individual honors. Nikolaus Grotz was named the RMAC Player of the Year, Ryan Leach was the Defender of the Year, Collin Hall earned Goalkeeper of the Year, John Haist claimed Freshman of the Year, and longtime head coach Frank Kohlenstein was named Coach of the Year.

Colorado Mines went undefeated in the regular season at 14-0-3 and 9-0-1 in conference games. Two of the team’s draws came against Fort Lewis.

FLC will play Metro State in the RMAC Tournament quarterfinals at 4 p.m. Wednesday in Denver.
