Six holiday drive events planned in Durango

Four Corners Broadcasting looks to fill void left by Project Merry Christmas
Four Corners Broadcasting is organizing a series of six holiday drives in the community to fill the void left by the dissolution of Project Merry Christmas.

As the holiday season nears and the Durango area is without Project Merry Christmas for the first time in 34 years, Four Corners Broadcasting is attempting to fill the void.

Kristin Dills, operations manager at the media company, said the radio station had supported Project Merry Christmas for more than 15 years.

“In January, when they chose to dissolve, we felt the need to continue this community support, just in a different manner,” Dills said.

In order to continue community support for those in need during the holiday season, the broadcasting company has created the Holiday Donation Drive. Four Corners Broadcasting will host community donation drives every Saturday from Nov. 14 to Dec. 19 at various businesses throughout the community.

Each Saturday will benefit a different nonprofit in the community. The events will be set up as drive-thrus. Representatives from FCB and the nonprofit of the week will be wearing facial coverings and gloves while accepting donations to reduce the chance of COVID-19 transmission. Despite the drives being COVID-19 friendly, Dills said there will be DJs and live music if people want to hangout, in a socially distanced manner.

One hundred percent of donations will be given to the nonprofits and cash donations are welcomed. Each nonprofit will also welcome specific items related to their mission, but residents will have to tune in each week to FCB stations to find out what items are requested. Dills said all the nonprofits have been hit hard by COVID-19 and have less money than usual. Residents can also donate online at radiodurango.com.

“Project Merry Christmas filled a huge hole in our community as far as who they supported. We’re just barely scratching the surface of what they did,” Dills said. “So, anyone who can help out during these donation drives would be greatly appreciated, but I just want to encourage everybody to find a nonprofit that is near and dear to their heart and support them however they can.”
