Ski areas’ last day is coming soon

Purgatory to close after Sunday but may reopen
Time to get in your last runs; Sunday is the last of the season for Purgatory Resort, Wolf Creek Skia Area and Telluride Ski Resort. Purgatory may reopen April 10-12 for one more weekend.

Southwest Colorado ski areas are winding down their winter seasons with special events and discounts.

Purgatory Resort, Wolf Creek Ski Area and Telluride Ski Resort will mark their last days on Sunday, which coincides with Easter.

“Overall, it’s been a great season,” said Purgatory spokeswoman Kim Oyler.

Purgatory is evaluating whether to reopen April 10-12 for one more weekend, she said. The ski area is looking at long-term forecasts and will make a call in the next day or two, Oyler said.

Saturday, Purgatory will host Gaper Day along with Ska Brewing Co. with live music, a costume contest and beach games. A costume contest will also be held Sunday.

Purgatory and Wolf Creek will host egg hunts for kids Sunday.

Wolf Creek will have discounted lift tickets Wednesday and Sunday. Adult tickets will be $41, and tickets for senior citizens and children will be $24. College students will get a discount Saturday.

Telluride will host a pond skim on its closing day, spokeswoman Pepper Raper said in an email. A pond is set up at the base, and skiers and snowboarders will attempt to glide across it.

Wolf Creek reported a midway depth of 63 inches Tuesday, while Purgatory reported 38 inches. Hesperus Ski Area has closed for the season.

A pole, pedal, paddle multi-sport endurance event scheduled for Saturday at Purgatory has been canceled.
