Sky Ute gets kicking

Casino hosts King of the Cage mixed martial arts action

Sidiah Parker was a 29-28, 29-28, 29-28 unanimous-decision winner of the King of the Cage: Aggressive Lifestyle card's co-main event Saturday night, Sept. 1, inside Sky Ute Casino Resort Events Center in Ignacio.

From Bay City, Mich., Jay "Action" Jackson dropped to 3-11 while Parker-the current KOTC World MiddleweightChampion-improved to 19-6 after winning the catchweight bout. The duo contested over three five-minute rounds at 175 pounds.

"I hit him with some good shots; the guy's got a chin, obviously," Parker said. "Most of those shots would have taken any fighter out. But.if I got the knockout, or I didn't, it's fine; I'm happy with the result." He added, "This fight was just to test the waters, see if I can make 170-which I know I can now. So I'm going to be dropping to that weight class and hopefully soon I'll get another fight. I'm looking forward to that; 2018-2019's going to be a big year for me." Parker is fighting out of Albuquerque but originally from Blanding, Utah.

Also winning during the 11-bout card's proportion were Colorado Springs' Joseph Galaviz (29-28, 30-27, 30-27 at 160 pounds over San Francisco's Nikko Nathan, and Brazilian Luiz Gavinho (knockout by punch, 0:14 of Round 1 at 145 pounds over Belen, New Mexico's Derek Perez).

Panamanian Joselyne 'La Pantera' Edwards Laboriel clashed with Moriarty, New Mexico's Brenda 'Boom Boom' Gonzales-Means. Edwards Laboriel won 2 minutes, 53 seconds into the second round (three five-minute rounds had been scheduled) at 140 pounds by armbar submission. She improved to 8-1 as a professional while Gonzales-Means dipped to 8-4 after the loss.

"The altitude was messing with me," Edwards Laboriel said, through translator/coach/promoter BrianGreen. "I felt that I was starting to get tired, and I knew that I had to finish the fight so I did it. I fought against a very tough opponent, a very strong girl. Brenda's super-strong." She added, "Thank you King of the Cage for the opportunity to fight for your championship; it's such a big organization." Eleven bouts in all were on the card, with the title fight the fourth and last pro pairing.
