Skyhawks’ drought ends at 351 minutes in N.M.

Three hundred and 51 minutes later, the Fort Lewis College Skyhawks’ scoring drought is over.

Courtney Riley scored in the 70th minute to give the FLC women’s soccer team its first Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference victory, the first of Jimmy Hall’s head coaching career.

“It’s always a battle here, and I am so proud of how the girls answered the challenge,” Hall said in a news release. “It is an intense environment, and Courtney Riley scored while hunting for rebounds. It was off of our third or fourth attempt in that offensive set.”

Riley’s goal, her second of the season, both game-winners, broke a scoreless tie and gave FLC a 1-0 victory over New Mexico Highlands on Sunday in Las Vegas, N.M.

“It was a physical battle, but we fought through and finally found a goal,” Riley said in the news release. “We stuck together as a team, and I couldn’t be more proud to be a part of a fmaily like this.”

Caitlyn Espinosa made six saves to earn the clean sheet.

FLC (2-3-1, 1-1-0 RMAC) will host Western State at 12:30 p.m. Friday, CSU-Pueblo at noon Sunday, then Adams State at 3 p.m. Wednesday – all at Dirks Field, the Skyhawks’ home pitch.
