Goodbye, Western Intercollegiate Lacrosse Association. Hello, Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference.
The RMAC officially added women’s lacrosse as a conference sport this week for the upcoming school year, with traditional RMAC schools jumping from the WILA to join their respective schools’ other programs.
Fort Lewis College will join Adams State, Colorado Mesa and Regis as full RMAC members making the switch in lacrosse. Also joining the conference as associate members for lacrosse only are Lindenwood (St. Louis) and Rockhurst (Kansas City, Mo.).
“This is a great opportunity for hundreds of student-athletes to compete for a conference championship in the RMAC,” RMAC interim Commissioner Eric Danner said in a news release. “This will also expose our conference to a group of new fans and get our brand out to a new part of the country.”
The addition of women’s lacrosse brings the league’s total of sponsored sports up to 22. It’s the first addition to the conference since the men’s and women’s swimming and diving in 2008.
Rockhurst will be participating in women’s lacrosse for the first time this 2013 season. The other five schools are former WILA programs.
