Skyhawks race in two-day Maverick Open

FLC lacrosse drops back-and-forth game to Westminster

For the second time this spring, the Fort Lewis College men’s and women’s track teams headed to Colorado Mesa University for the Maverick Open. Competition began Friday and ended Saturday afternoon in Grand Junction.

Brady Burrough and Travis Kearney had good showings in the 800-meter race, coming in fifth and sixth, respectively, with times of 2:00.81 and 2:02.09.

Leading the Skyhawks in the 1,500 race was Aaron Busche, placing 12th in 4:16.37.

Cody Speece led the team in the 10K race, finishing second in 34:38.27.

Saylor Sargent led the women’s pack in the 800, crossing fourth in 2:15.70. Katie Fankhouser followed closest behind, finishing in 2:15.77.

Carmella Wright (5:11.80) and Sophia Mena (5:12.24) led the blue and gold in the 1,500 race in sixth and seventh.

In the 10K, Taylor Murphy clocked a 45:45.22 for a fifth-place finish.

Krista Benze rounded out the first day of competition with a fourth-place effort in the 400-meter hurdles (1:05.89).

The men’s team shined on day two of competition.

In the 5,000, Steven Nez crossed the line in third place with a time of 15:29.30. Closely behind was Cebastian Marquez, who finished fourth in 15:32.51. Ricky Trejo also cracked the top 10, coming in ninth in 15:49.11.

In the 3,000-meter steeplechase, Kiddo Gaorekwe placed fourth in 10:04.87 to lead the team. Max Robinson (10:11.21) and Braedon Sittman (10:14.58) followed in fifth and sixth.

Angel Curley (19:03.41) led the women in the 5,000 with a fifth-place finish. Following Curley was Katie Fankhouser with a time of 19:13.71 – good for seventh place.

Carmella Wright led the team in the 3,000-meter steeplechase, placing fourth in 12:02.88. Peyton Burnside crossed 11th in 13:39.48.

The Skyhawks were scheduled to compete Thursday at the University of New Mexico’s Don Kirby Tailwind meet.

FLC lacrosse falls 19-18 to Westminster

A one-goal edge for Westminster College at the end of the first quarter was the difference in a narrow 19-18 loss for the Fort Lewis College women’s lacrosse team on Saturday.

Westminster led 4-3 after one and 10-8 at halftime. FLC won the third 6-5 to enter the fourth at 15-14. Maren Clark tied the game, and Caprietta Abbadessa gave the Skyhawks a 16-15 lead. Westminster took the lead back, but Haley Dostie got an assist from Phoebe Ramirez to tie it at 17-17. Westminster, however, scored the next two goals and held on for the win.

Abbadessa and Dostie tallied four goals apiece. Dostie added two assists to match Mikki Brown in that category. Liv Crawford picked up a hat trick with three goals on three shots on goal, and Maren Clark rounded out double-digit scorers with two goals on the day.

Fort Lewis is now 4-9 overall and 4-5 in the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference. Westminster improved to 4-7, 4-4 RMAC.

FLC will next play at No. 5 Regis at 7 p.m. on Friday.
