The strong spring outdoor track and field season for the Fort Lewis College women’s team continued Saturday in Pueblo.
The Skyhawks finished in the middle of the pack with 52.5 points to place sixth out of 12 teams at the Span Blasing Invitational hosted by Colorado State University-Pueblo.
Western State Colorado University won the women’s meet with 120.5 points. Adams State was second with 105 points, and New Mexico Highlands was third with 100 points. FLC finished better than Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference foes UC-Colorado Springs (49), Metro State (34), Regis (16) and Colorado Mesa (12).
Emma Alaimo, an FLC sophomore, won the women’s 200-meter dash in 26.11 seconds. Western State freshman Kelly Penney was second in 26.29 seconds. Alaimo also was second in the triple jump at 11.06 meters. The winning jump was 12.75 meters from New Mexico Highlands freshman Annie Topal.
Rebecca Bramley had another strong meet. She ran the 10,000 meters in 38 minutes, 32.94 seconds to finish third. That time broke her previous school record in the event by more than 10 seconds. The winning time came from Colorado Mesa senior Lauren Lipski, who finished in 37:35.75.
Katie Hawkins, a Bayfield High alumna, was third in the pole vault. The FLC sophomore cleared 2.97 meters (9-feet, 9-inches). The winning jump came from CSU-Pueblo senior Angelique Urenda, who cleared 3.57 meters (11-08.5).
Grace Pinckley placed eighth in the 100-meter hurdles in 18.59 seconds to beat her previous school record time of 19.30.
Ashley Kienitz broke her previous school record in the discus throw at 34.16 meters. She placed 11th.
Saylor Sargent was seventh in the 400 in 59.71 seconds, and she ran to ninth in the 800 in 2:26.28. Quinlyn Borneo was 10th in the 100 in 13.71. Rose Chemeli was 10th in the 3,000-meter steeplechase in 13:11.12.
Next weekend, FLC will travel to the University of New Mexico for the Don Kirby Tailwind meet April 7 in Albuquerque.
The Fort Lewis College softball team wrapped up its four-game series against No. 1 Colorado Mesa University with a pair of 12-0 losses Sunday in Grand Junction. Both games ended after five innings.
In the first game, the Mavericks (34-0, 24-0 Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference) recorded 15 hits, and 11 of their 12 runs were earned. AnnMarie Torres led CMU at the plate, as she went 2-for-3 with two doubles and three runs batted in. Brooke Hodgson, Kaila Jacobi, Kellie Mrofcza and Zoe Pakes all had an RBI double in the win. The Mavericks were a combined 15-for-28 at the plate.
McKenzie Surface (17-0) earned the win for CMU. She pitched five innings and allowed two hits, walked two batters and struck out 10.
Kassidy Trumbo (1-7) took the loss for FLC (10-28, 4-20 RMAC). She pitched all four innings, allowed 15 hits, walked one and struck out two batters.
Angelique Elemen and Pillar Gutierrez both singled for FLC.
In Game 2, CMU got out to a fast start with an RBI triple from Alexandria Dufour, then saw Hodgson blast a two-run home run in the first inning.
Dufour added an RBI double in the second inning and finished the game 2-for-3 with two RBIs. Jacobi, Mrofcza and Abby Toller each recorded an RBI double in the game, and Surface hit a two-run double to help pace the Mavericks’ offense.
Kimbri Herring (13-0) earned the win for CMU. She pitched three innings, allowed one hit, no walks and struck out five batters. Hodgson pitched two innings in relief and allowed one hit.
Kelly Decker (1-8) had the loss for FLC. She pitched all four innings, allowed 14 hits, walked four, struck out one and all 12 runs scored were earned.
Gutierrez, Tristen Gilbert and Madelynne Blood-Smyth recorded the three hits – all singles – for the Skyhawks.
In the four-game series, FLC was outscored 42-0.
FLC will host New Mexico Highlands University (6-26, 2-21 RMAC) for a four-game series Saturday and Sunday at the Aztec Tiger Sports Complex in Aztec.
