The Fort Lewis College men’s golf team secured a top-10 finish at the St. Edward’s Invitational in Austin, Texas.
The Skyhawks posted a team score of 896 to finish 10th of 12 teams at the three-round tournament Monday and Tuesday at the par-70 Onion Creek Club.
Cameron University in Lawton, Oklahoma, won the team title with a score of 864, one shot in front of St. Edward’s at 865.
Hudson Ross of St. Edward’s won the individual title after shooting a 1-under par 209. He was four shots clear of Oklahoma Christian University’s Jan Pallach in second place.
Hugh Taylor posted the low score of the tournament for FLC. He shot three rounds of 75 to finish at 15-over for the tournament and tied for 39th. Tyler Blohm and Matt Huntley finished tied for 41st with scores of 226. Austin Lienemann finished tied for 55th with a 230.
Zane Sauer only completed two rounds at the tournament for FLC. He shot an 83 in the second round, then bounced back with an even-par 70 in the third round. Blohm was the only other Skyhawk to post a 70 in the tournament, as he shot even in the first round.
Regis University was the only other Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference team at the tournament. The Rangers shot 881 to place fifth.
The FLC men’s golf team will next compete at the Western New Mexico University Mustang Intercollegiate on April 2-3 at Palm Valley Golf Club in Goodyear, Arizona.
The Skyhawks shaved five strokes off their first-round team score to place eighth out of 14 teams at the Pack Spring Invitational, hosted by Colorado State University-Pueblo this week in Pueblo.
The Fort Lewis College women’s golf team shot a two-round score of 655 to edge Kansas’ Bethany College by three strokes at Walking Stick Golf Course.
Midwestern State won the team title with an 11-over 587. University of Colorado-Colorado Springs was second at 595 and CSU-Pueblo was third at 596.
Katie Ford of Dixie State University won the individual title after shooting two rounds of 71 to finish at 2-under par. CSU-Pueblo’s Courtney Ewing was second at 1-under.
Isabella Martinez was the low Skyhawk at the tournament, as she shot a 12-over 156 to place 22nd. Martinez finished the tournament with four birdies and played the par-5s at 2-under par. FLC’s Summer Vigil carded five birdies and was right behind Martinez with a score of 164 that had her tied for 26th.
FLC’s Amanda Westrick and Kara Tschirhart tied for 48th with scores of 170, and Lauren Trujillo rounded out the Skyhawks with a 185 to finish 66th.
The Skyhawks will be back on the course for the Western New Mexico University Mustang Intercollegiate on April 9-10 at Palm Valley Golf Club in Goodyear, Arizona.
The Fort Lewis College football team announced two additions to its coaching staff when head coach Joe Morris named Mac Alexander and Brandon Crosby as two of his assistants.
Alexander was named FLC’s defensive coordinator and Crosby was named the offensive coordinator/quarterbacks coach.
Alexander will bring plenty of knowledge of the RMAC, as he spent the past few seasons on the staff at Colorado Mesa University. He was the Mustangs’ defensive backs and co-special teams coordinator for the 2016 and 2017 seasons, and prior to that he was a graduate assistant in 2014 and 2015 when he coached the defensive line and defensive backs.
“I am very blessed and excited to join the Fort Lewis family and to be a part of this dominant athletic department,” Alexander said in a news release. “I am thankful for the opportunity coach Morris has given me and want to build on the culture he has built here at Fort Lewis.”
Crosby joins the Skyhawks after spending last season as the quarterbacks quality control coach and a graduate assistant for receivers at the University of Nevada. Prior to coaching the Wolf Pack, Crosby was a receivers coach at West Texas A&M in 2016 and had coaching stops at Division III programs LaGrange College and Willamette University, and at Saddleback College, a junior college.
“Coach Crosby is a player’s coach who loves to study the game of football,” Morris said in the release. “He has worked under some great coaches and will bring a new dynamic to a very talented offense.”
FLC will open its season against New Mexico Highlands University on Sept. 1 at Ray Dennison Memorial Field in Durango.
Rasmus Bach put together a storied career playing for the Fort Lewis College men’s basketball program and added another accolade when he was named Division II Bulletin honorable mention on Monday.
There were 65 men’s basketball players recognized by the organization, 35 of which, including Bach, were named honorable mention.
Bach, a senior, averaged 14.9 points, 5.1 rebounds and a career-high 3.6 assists per game, and was named to the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference first team.
In FLC history, Bach ranks second in points (1,841) and made free throws (497), third in made field goals (615), fifth in assists (320) and eighth in rebounds (639).
Fort Lewis College’s softball team split its series with Adams State University during the weekend at the Aztec Tiger Sports Complex.
In the four-game series, the Grizzlies took Game 1 8-3 before the Skyhawks got a 10-8 win in Game 2 on Saturday. On Sunday, FLC blasted ASU 7-2 in the third game of the series, then fell 3-1 in the final game.
The Skyhawks (10-24, 4-16 Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference) recorded 28 hits compared to 34 for the Grizzlies (11-19, 8-8 RMAC), and committed 13 errors to ASU’s five in the four games.
FLC will play a four-game series against Colorado Mesa University (30-0, 20-0), the No. 1 ranked team in the nation, on Friday and Saturday in Grand Junction.
