Skyhawks scoreboard: Fort Lewis College men’s soccer earns draw against UCCS

Skyhawks’ volleyball, women’s soccer suffer heartbreak

The Fort Lewis men’s soccer team rallied from a second-half deficit to earn a draw against the University of Colorado-Colorado Springs on Friday night in Colorado Springs.

All the action happened in the second half.

UCCS took a 1-0 lead when Luke White got behind the FLC defense and put a shot past keeper Peter Byrne with about 25 minutes left in the match.

The Skyhawks (0-2-3, 0-0-1 RMAC) got the equalizer in the 72nd minute when Landon Gibson found the back of the net from about 10 yards out on the left side.

The draw was an appropriate ending, at least on paper. UCCS (0-4-1, 0-0-1) outshot the Skyhawks 15-14, with both teams putting seven shots on goal. UCCS also held a slight edge, receiving 11 corner kicks to 10 for FLC.

FLC will close out the weekend with a match against Colorado State University-Pueblo (0-5, 0-1) on Sunday in Pueblo. The game is scheduled to start at 2:30 p.m.

Women’s soccer
CSU-Pueblo 1, Fort Lewis College 0

The Fort Lewis College women’s soccer team lost a heartbreaker in the Skyhawks’ RMAC opener, as they fell 1-0 to Colorado State University-Pueblo in extra time Friday night in Pueblo.

Pueblo found the goal after a corner kick bounced around in the box and was finally poked in by Rianna Lockhart.

CSU-Pueblo (2-3, 1-0 RMAC) had the more threatening attack in the first half. Pueblo got off seven shots compared to just one for the Skyhawks (0-3-1, 0-1) in the first half. However, Pueblo put only two of its seven shots on goal.

“I thought their girls pressed well and took away our time and space to play,” FLC head coach Jimmy Hall said. “The girls battled and grinded through it. You have to battle and deal with those frustrations, and I think we created a number of moments (to score).”

Pueblo took 19 shots in the match compared to two for the Skyhawks.

FLC will play at New Mexico Highlands (0-3-2, 0-1) on Sunday in Taos, New Mexico.

Volleyball
Black Hills State 3, Fort Lewis College 2

The Fort Lewis College volleyball team had an up and down start to its Rocky Mountain Conference schedule with a five-set loss to Black Hills State (4-5, 1-0 RMAC) Friday night at Whalen Gymnasium.

The two sides battled back and forth the whole match.

After winning the first set 25-22, the Skyhawks (5-4, 0-1) fell 26-24 in the second and couldn’t bounce back in the third set, with a 25-19 loss to fall behind 2-1.

But FLC rebounded to win the fourth set with a 25-18 win that forced a decisive fifth set.

In the fifth, the Skyhawks fell behind 4-0, which prompted a timeout to regroup. But the Skyhawks couldn’t recover and lost the final set 15-7.

Laine Waters and Maddie LeBlanc led Fort Lewis with 13 and 12 kills, respectively. Kendra Swakenberg recorded 43 assists and Bailey Longacre had five total blocks.

The Skyhawks will be back on court Saturday, hosting South Dakota Mines (1-8, 0-1).
