Skyhawks Scoreboard: Fort Lewis College’s Vivian Gray garners RMAC defensive player of the week

FLC men in top 25 for 32nd week in a row

Vivian Gray earned yet another accolade Monday when the freshman for the Fort Lewis College women’s basketball team was named the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference’s defensive player of the week on Monday.

This week is the second in a row Gray was named defensive player of the week, and an FLC player has won the honor in each of the three weeks of the season. Sophomore Kayla Herrera won the award for week 1 of the season.

In two games last week against Colorado State University-Pueblo and New Mexico Highlands University, Gray, from Argyle, Texas, recorded 16 rebounds, blocked six shots and had four steals. She also scored 27 points and dished out 11 assists.

The Skyhawks lost their first game of the season to CSU-Pueblo Friday night in Pueblo, and the loss dropped the team from No. 11 to No. 20 in this week’s Women’s Basketball Coaches Association poll.

FLC (6-1) earned 166 points in the poll and has been ranked in the top 25 each week this season.

Ashland University of Ashland, Ohio, maintained the top spot in the poll. The Eagles have been No. 1 in the poll each week this season and received all 24 first-place votes for 600 points.

No other team in the RMAC cracked the top-25 poll, but Colorado Mesa University received 18 votes.

The Skyhawks (6-1, 1-1 RMAC) will host Colorado Mesa University (8-0, 2-0 RMAC) in their RMAC home opener at 5:30 Friday evening at Whalen Gymnasium.

Men’s basketball

The Fort Lewis College men’s basketball team landed at No. 15 in the National Association of Basketball Coaches poll this week to make it 32 weeks in a row the Skyhawks have been ranked in the top 25.

The Skyhawks earned 152 points in the poll.

Northwest Missouri State received the No. 1 ranking with 398 points and 14 of the 16 first-place votes.

Colorado School of Mines was the only other team from the RMAC to be ranked and came in at No. 6 with 323 points.

The Skyhawks (5-1, 2-0 RMAC) will play Colorado Mesa University (5-3, 1-1 RMAC) at 7:30 p.m. Friday for their RMAC home opener at Whalen Gymnasium.
