The Fort Lewis College men’s golf team had a strong showing in its first tournament of the season, tying for third place with a team score of 872 at the CSU-Pueblo Invitational at Walking Stick Golf Course in Pueblo.
The Skyhawks’ score of 8-over-par on Monday and Tuesday matched New Mexico Junior College. CSU-Pueblo won the tournament with an even-par 864, three strokes clear of Lewis University in second place. Ten teams competed at the tournament.
Four Fort Lewis players finished in the top 20 of the tournament.
Hugh Taylor, Matt Huntley and Tyler Blohm were all tied for 11th at 1-over after the first and second rounds on Monday.
Taylor and Huntley slid two spots during Tuesday’s third round to tie for 13th with scores of 2-over 218. Austin Lienemann led the Skyhawks on Tuesday, posting a 2-under 70 to finish at 4-over for the tournament and a 16th-place finish, one shot ahead of Blohm. Zane Sauer rounded out the Skyhawks with a 9-over 225, placing him tied for 22nd.
CSU-Pueblo’s Fraser Hughes and Nathan McCann led all players with 8-under 208s.
On the women’s side of the tournament, Fort Lewis finished seventh of 12 teams with a 677.
UC-Colorado Springs won the tournament with a 604, followed by CSU-Pueblo at 613, and Metro State University and Western New Mexico tying for third at 636.
Madison Hill of Lewis University won the women’s tournament with a 2-over 146.
Summer Vigil led Fort Lewis with a 157 to tie for 13th place. Isabella Martinez (162), Lauren Trujillo (180), Shelby Hindes (183) and Sophie Schwartz (185) rounded out the roster for the Skyhawks.
The Fort Lewis women will be back in action at the RMAC Women’s Golf Fall Event on Sept 11-12 at Fox Hollow Golf Course in Lakewood.
The men will be off until next month, playing at the Western New Mexico Fall Intercollegiate on Oct. 2-3 in Goodyear, Arizona.
