Skyhawks’ season ends in seventh

FLC men’s golf climbs two spots at the RMAC Championships

The deal was: win the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference Men’s Golf Championships and advance to regionals.

Fort Lewis College didn’t get off to the start it needed – last of nine teams Monday at the Golf Club of Estrella in Goodyear, Ariz. – but the Skyhawks rallied Day 2 to finish seventh overall.

Western New Mexico finished 14-over par to win the tournament, seven strokes ahead of runner-up CSU-Pueblo.

UC-Colorado Springs finished third, Colorado Mesa fourth, Adams State fifth, Colorado Christian sixth, FLC seventh (313-301-303–917), Colorado School of Mines eighth and Regis ninth.

David Metz of Western N.M. was medalist with a 73-67-74–214 to finish 2-under par on the par-72, 7,139-yard golf course.

Jacob Allenback of CSU-Pueblo, Colin Prater of Colorado Mesa and Patrick Skakel of UC-Colorado Springs tied for second place at even par.

Matt Porter of CSU-Pueblo finished fifth at 2-over par.

Durango High School alumnus Morgan Miller led the Skyhawks with a 77-74-75–226 for a 10-over par after two days and three rounds and tied for 14th place.

“I was really impressed with him because he was not hitting his normal shot,” FLC head coach Bud Anderson said. “He learned to play with it. Being a younger player, he showed a lot of maturity.”

Lucas Laudick tied for 21st at 12 over, Dillon Washburn tied for 26th at 15 over, Bryan Schlicter tied for 33rd at 19 over, and Josh Woodworth finished 37th at 23-over par.

Laudick’s 73 in the second round to start Tuesday’s play was the Skyhawks’ lowest round of the tournament.

“I think the future’s really bright. I have a young team, and I’ve got a lot of talent,” Anderson said. “With more experience and more play time, they’re going to get a lot better.”
