Skyhawks shutout Western Colorado in home win

Early goals propel FLC women’s soccer

There was no let up from the Fort Lewis College women’s soccer team eight days after a four-goal performance.

The Skyhawks secured a 3-0 victory at home Sunday against Western Colorado University to improve to 2-0-2 on the season. The game went down as the first Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference contest this season for FLC.

FLC scored a pair of goals early in the match. Corinne Sanderson scored her second of the season in the 14th minute. Katie Smith scored her first this spring less than four minutes later, as she took a pass from Elizabeth David and beat the Western Colorado goalkeeper, Kaeyla Noble, who made nine saves.

FLC tallied another goal in the second half, as Ashley Strader struck in the 53rd minute.

Western Colorado (0-5-0, 0-1-0 RMAC) was limited to one shot in the first half and eight in the match with only four on goal. Skyhawks goalkeeper Katie Dunbabin was able to make all four saves for the shutout.

FLC fired 19 shots on goal with 12 on target during the onslaught.

The Skyhawks will welcome a big test at 1 p.m. Thursday against Colorado School of Mines (4-0-2, 2-0-1 RMAC) before a Saturday trip to CSU-Pueblo.
